Spinal Cord

The spinal cord runs from the base of the brain, down the back, and to your waist. It contains a bundle of nerves which controls the communications between your brain and the rest of your body. The spinal cord is protected by bones called vertebrae. A sudden or traumatic impact to the spinal column can fracture or dislocate the vertebrae or damage the spinal cord. The extent and area affected depends on the location on the spine of the injury and severity of the impact. Trauma to the spinal cord results in loss of movement, or paralysis, incontinence, and severe pain. Spinal cord injuries have many causes but are typically associated with motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, violence, and equipment misuse. In many cases, these injuries are the fault of another person or company.
